The Local Business Growth Checklist
One ordered list covering visibility, website, lead capture, follow-up and measurement — with the detailed guide behind each step.
Quick answer
Work in this order: fix your Google Business Profile, make sure a buying customer can find the right page on your site, make contacting you effortless, respond fast every time, and then measure what produced revenue. Doing them out of order is why most local marketing underperforms.

Order matters more than effort
Most local businesses do the right things in the wrong sequence — buying traffic before the site converts, or rebuilding a site while the Google profile sits half finished.
This checklist is ordered by how much each step usually returns for the effort. Work down it. Each step links to the guide that explains it properly.
Automate Omaha is based in Bellevue, Nebraska and works with businesses throughout the Omaha metro, so most of what follows comes from looking at real local listings, sites and lead trails rather than national averages.
1. Be findable
- Google Business Profile verified, complete, with the right primary category and real services.
- Name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear online.
- A page on your website for each service you actually want to sell.
- A steady flow of genuine reviews rather than occasional bursts.
The two guides behind step one
If you are invisible in search or stuck below the map pack, start with these.
2. Make the site do its job
- Loads fast on a phone on cellular data.
- Says what you do, where, and the one next step in the first screen.
- Tappable phone number in the mobile header.
- A short form that asks only what you need to reply.
3. Capture and answer every lead
- Every form submission alerts a phone, not just an inbox.
- Missed-call text-back covers the hours you cannot answer.
- An automatic acknowledgement sets an expectation at any hour.
- A written three-touch follow-up sequence so nothing is decided in the moment.
The response side, in detail
Speed of reply is usually the single highest-return fix on this list.
4. Measure what produced revenue
- Analytics installed and actually checked against reality.
- Calls and form submissions recorded as conversions, not just page views.
- Every caller asked how they found you.
- A quarterly comparison of booked work by channel.
If you only do three things
Complete the Google Business Profile properly, make the phone number tappable on mobile, and reply to every lead within five minutes during business hours. For most local businesses those three account for the bulk of the available gain.
When to get help
Nothing on this list requires an agency. It requires someone to own it and keep owning it, which is the part that usually fails.
Bring in help when the pieces need to work as one system — website, Google visibility, lead capture, follow-up and measurement agreeing with each other — or when you have worked through the list and want to know which step is still leaking. Frequently asked questions
Where should I start if I can only pick one thing?
Your Google Business Profile. For local searches it decides whether you appear at all, and completing it costs nothing but time.
How long does working through this take?
The Google profile and lead-capture items are a few days of focused work. Website and search improvements are measured in months.
Do I need all of this to compete locally?
No. Most local markets are won by the business that is findable, easy to contact, and quick to reply. That is the first three sections.
